RENO, Nev. – September 7. 2024

On August 2, 2024, an incident occurred in Virginia City during our Hot August Nights kickoff. Our organization does not condone nor support racism or hate speech. We took action to permanently revoke the registrations of the car participants seen in the viral video from all future Hot August Nights events.

Following our immediate actions, we conducted a very successful event in Reno-Sparks. Immediately following the event, Hot August Nights met with representatives from Virginia City. The decision made by the Board, and recommended by staff, was to request a mutual termination of the remaining agreement between Hot August Nights and Virginia City. The letter can be viewed here.

The Virginia City Tourism Commission (VCTC) will review the request during its next regular Board of Commissioners meeting scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 12, at 10 a.m.

As stated in the letter, the request for mutual termination is designed to allow both parties and the community an opportunity to navigate the next several months and demonstrate the region’s resolve in overcoming challenges. HAN is thankful for the collaboration that has taken place over the past 10 years.
